Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker says government remains committed to hosting the long overdue local government elections at the earliest opportunity, in his first address after being sworn in as minister.
According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) Whittaker said he was echoing statements made by PPP/C Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar who had reaffirmed government’s position to businessmen at an event organised by the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association in May.
In his address to the media, he also said he plans to be more involved in local government activities which embrace the ten RDCs, 65 NDCs and five other municipalities besides City Hall. Regarding his involvement in City Hall, particularly in light of its many challenges, he posited that there is a need for serious monitoring, control of expenditures and debt collection in that office.
