Dear Editor,
The Toshao of Arau, Region Seven, Devroy Thomas, was very clear in his submission that the just concluded National Toshaos Conference achieved or offered very little or nothing to his community (‘Toshaos say land issues being ignored’ SN, July 30). Mr Thomas contended that the land issues were not properly addressed at the conference, along with other issues including mining, environmental destruction and social problems. Mr Thomas was quoted as saying: “At this meeting we had no agenda beforehand, we did not have a chance to say what issues would be discussed and so we held no discussions in our villages. We were not able to bring decisions from our communities before we came to this meeting.” As a community leader it was Mr Thomas’s responsibility, knowing he was going to represent his community at a top-level conference, to hold discussions and meetings with the community and formulate or document the litany of issues and problems affecting the residents. This could have been forwarded to the NTC for consideration to be included in the conference agenda. It did not need an agenda beforehand to do this.
On a different topic I was once again disgusted, but not surprised to read that Mavado was at it again and was embroiled in an assault case. If the allegations are true, then I have to ask would we want this kind of artiste in our midst during the Jamzone festivities? Would we seriously support, with our hard earned dollars, someone of this calibre who has no regard for another person and gives such a brutal response to a simple matter? I wonder what the views of the organizers of Jamzone 2011 are?
We should hear from them. As for me, I will
seriously consider boycotting the regional concert once the allegations levelled against Mavado are proven to be true.
The Commission of Inquiry established by GuySuCo to look into the fatal accident of Jainarine Singh has made known its findings and recommendations. It is hoped now GuySuCo would commission another inquiry to determine causes and culpability in relation to the accident which occurred at Wales Sugar Factory resulting in the death of another employee, Hardat Miranjee.
This accident occurred on Saturday, April 30 and Mr Miranjee was hospitalized for one week before succumbing to his injuries.
Yours faithfully,
