The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) honoured West Indian players Devendra Bishoo and Shemaine Campbelle through its Tribute to Heroes programme last Wednesday which was sponsored by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) in Berbice.
According to a press release, Bishoo was honoured for becoming the 15th Berbician to play Test Cricket while Campbelle was honoured for becoming the first female cricketer to score 150 runs in a single innings.
Chairman of the BCB’s special events committee and Secretary/CEO of the Rose RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster hailed the two young cricketers as outstanding ambassadors for the ancient county and as positive role models for youths.
He said Bishoo was following in the footsteps of John Trim, Rohan Kanhai, Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon, Ivan Madray, Roy Fredericks, Alvin Kallicharran, Clayton Lambert, Sew Shivnarine, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Narsingh Deonarine, Leonard Baichan, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Brandon Bess. Foster then challenged Bishoo to continue his hard work, to remain a disciplined and humble cricketer. Foster also expressed his admiration for Campbelle and urged her to work on any weaknesses in her game.
President of the BCB, Keith Foster congratulated both players and pledged the board’s assistance to helping them become more successful.
In response, Bishoo who also spoke on Campbelle’s behalf, expressed gratitude to the BCB for recognising them. He also pledged to continue to work hard as he aims to become a legend in the game.
