Local Muslim organisations say this year’s observances for the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday will feature world renowned qaseeda singer Jameer Hoosein at the Eight Annual Eid Fest Programme set for the ACIC.
According to a press release this year’s programme will continue to carry an international theme and feature representatives from Muslim organisations in Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Holland, England, the USA and Canada, to mark the end of the month of Ramadan.
The event, which was first observed in 2003, is hosted by the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex (ACIC) and the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman. Leaders from all Muslim groups and jamaats from across Guyana are expected to participate in the programme set for Sunday September 4 at 1.30 pm at the ACIC. The release said members of government, opposition parties, the diplomatic corps and all other religious and social groups are also invited.
According to the release, Hoosein, the son of the late Hosein Ali, was born in Trinidad and he, along with his father and uncles practised singing in the village of Freeport; performing at weddings and other functions. He also practised under the leadership of the late Isaac Yankaran in the Naya Sangeet Orchestra and from there moved on to the Nau Jawan Orchestra under the leadership of Chander Bali. He then performed with the Naya Zamana Orchestra then the BWIA National Indian Orchestra under Maestro Harry Mahabir.
In 2010 Hoosein teamed up with Guyanese born musician Amar ‘Vinood’ Bisram and the Angles Caribbean Entertainment Group to record a remake of his first recording – Muslim Inspirational Qaseedas and Ghazals. The release said the programme will also feature several local singers including Mohan Nandu, Reyad Razack and Mohamed Shahid. Suriname nationally acclaimed qaseeda singer Ishak Yanki, accompanied by a Surinamese delegation led by Hadji Djameel Ashurf and Hadji Abdool Basheer Khodabux will also be participating.
