Led by captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Barbados registered their second victory of the WICB One-day tournament over the Windward Islands at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence yesterday.
Brathwaite, who has already played one Test match for the West Indies, led with a run-a-ball 77 (4×4, 1×6) before returning with the ball to be the leading wicket taker with 4-33 (10) from his gentle off-spin. He garnered support from Shai Hope, whose 53 was dotted with four boundaries from 87 balls, and Kyle Mayers, who contributed 41 to propel the Bajans to 251-7.
When the Windward Islands replied they fell shot by 63 runs, ending on 188-9 from their 50 overs as their chequered performance in the tournament continued. Wicketkeeper/batsman Sunil Ambris was again the top scorer with 37 while Jerlani Robinson made 36 and Jamaal James chipped in with 22.
Barbados’ Chad Williams had 2-23 from five overs. When the Windwards had bowled, skipper Kavem Hodge and Ray Jordan were the chief wicket takers with 2-61 and 2-55 respectively.
Robinson was aggressive early on, playing some sweetly timed shots but shortly after the introduction of Brathwaite, the Windwards second wicket fell at 54. Robinson was trapped lbw for 36, which included five fours, after sharing in a 50-run second wicket partnership with Keon George, who was guilty of wasting too many deliveries earlier on the partnership.
Subsequently, a 26-run stance ensued for the third wicket with George and Dwight Thomas but both departed one run apart from each other, leaving Ambris and James to repair the early damage. Ambris was the more vigilant of the two batsmen as they edged their team to within range of victory.
Ambris hit left arm spinner Chad Williams over midwicket off a free hit then drove the next delivery down the pitch to bring up their team’s 100. James got into the act when he smashed Chaim Holder over the long on boundary for six, signalling the intent to chase down the target.
But then Brathwaite struck again when he bowled James (22) after the pair had put 56 runs on the tins, leaving Ambris to look for another ally. Ambris, however, would not last much longer, holing out to long off attempting an expansive drive.
Larry Edward and an unbeaten Jordan (22*) tried to stir up some fight but the Windwards’ overs would expire leaving them out of contention.
