‘Lightning Struck Assassin’ Kwesi Jones will defend his light heavyweight title against Cleveland Fraser in the main event on August 26 at the monthly Pro-Am card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Jones, who only started fighting professionally two years ago, should find Fraser a tougher assignment than the ring-rusty Anthony Augustin whom he beat last month.
The always-chiselled Jones, an orthodox fighter, has fought 10 times and has two losses, one to Edmond De Clou, which was avenged, and the other to Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen.
Jones had lost to Allen when the two fought for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super middleweight title in May.
Fraser, who is Barbados–based, on the other hand, will be looking to break his two-fight losing streak in his six-fight career. His last win was against Patrick Wilson at the Barbados Community College, St. Michael, Barbados in March of 2009 before suffering crushing defeats against Sean Corbin (TKO 5) and Kurt Bess (TKO 4).
On the distaff side Veronica Blackman and Pauline London will be clashing for the third time. London is hoping that the third time will be lucky for her since she has lost both of their previous bouts against Blackman.
Blackman has five win and seven defeats with her most notable losses coming against Guyana’s first ladies world champion Gwendolyn O’Neal, when they fought for the vacant Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) and the Global Boxing Union Female heavyweight titles last year June.
Her other big loss was against Pamela London for the vacant WBC International female and Guyanese Women’s heavyweight titles. Conversely, Pauline London has not won a fight since she beat Debbi Tyson last year July.
Her abysmal record now stands at three wins and eight losses.
Former amateur wonder kid Clive Atwell will be coming up against Gardel Roberts of Barbados in another four round junior lightweight affair. Atwell last fought Earl Trotman in November and gaining a points decision. He also had a drawn encounter with Mark Austin in the second of four-fight career.
His opponent on the other hand has a solitary win from his six fights which came against Ryan Weekes. His last two losses were against Rudolph Fraser and Prince Lee Isidore earlier this year.
Rounding out the professional card, Revlon Lake will take on Cecil Smith in a four-round catchweight bout. Lake, who is Guyana’s lightweight champion, had a three-fight losing streak before he defeated Mark Austin in June.
He has five wins, five losses and two draws while Smith only has two wins in his seven outings in the ring.
Meanwhile, for the amateur card, which is yet to be finalized, ALBA Games bronze medallist Imran Khan is expected to be fighting since returning from Venezuela. This is information coming from president of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle.
