Champtress won her second of three feature events on Sunday when the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club (KMTC), Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne held its annual post-Emancipation horse race meet.
The horse, which was bred in the US and is owned by Dennis De Roop of the Simple Royal stable, was timed perfectly by jockey Yap ‘Old Boy’ Drepaul to turn out an excellent run down the home stretch of the B class event.
The win was worth $1,000,000 and the Carib Beer trophy, compliments of Ansa Mc Al Guyana Limited.
Dubai Duchess, Got to Go and Gullium had set a blistering pace for most of the race before Champtress made the move on the leaders.
Champtress eased past Tiger Prospect, a recent addition to the Elcock stable from the US, for second while Gullium held on for third ahead of Go to go.
The win also marked Drepaul’s fourth win in the last five feature events.
Majestic, of the Sheriff Racing stable of West Coast Berbice and ridden by Daniel ‘Buck man’ Flores, took top honours in the E and Lower race ahead of Fresh Prospect and Top of the Line. The win carried a top prize of $350,000 and the Balram Starohan trophy.
Work Force, which was ridden by Flores of the Vibert stable, worked up a steady pace to secure a gate-to-pole victory in the three-year-old event for horses bred and born in Guyana and the West Indies for the $250,000 winner’s money and the Harry Saroop trophy. Bio Fuel, Face the Fire and Sweet Miss rounded out the money.
Royal Champion, owned, trained and ridden by Rupert Ramnauth, was good enough down the homestretch to win the G Class six furlong event and the Eldorado stakes and trophy, compliments of Demerara Distillers Limited. Dream Girl came through for second as La Ruffian and South Sea had a tie for third in a race with a winning purse of $240,000.
Sheriff Racing Stable’s Settle in Seattle carted off the two-year-old five-furlong event for horses bred in the West Indies. Jockeyed by Prem Chandra, it eased away from the rest of the field on the homestretch to take the $200,000 first prize and the Romney Ramnarine and Sons trophy ahead Something Stylish and Rock Sonia.
De Lion, owned, trained and ridden by Nacimento roared to victory in the I Class six-furlong event to take the $175,000 winning purse and trophy, compliments of Lucky Dollar General Store. Royal Time, Extra Heat and Royal Salute finished in descending order.
Miracle Silver of the Bhola, won the I-3 five-furlong event ahead of Royal Intention, Cash Connection and JD Junior for the Clear Water trophy and the $140,000 first prize. On the other hand, Black Water dispatched the other horses to win the J and L Class five-furlong race, compliments of Nand Persaud and Company and the Nalico/Nafico trophy and first prize of $100,000.
Meanwhile, the champion jockey was Flores with Prem Chandra taking the runner-up position. The Sheriff stable was adjudged the top stable. Top performers were presented with the accolades from the Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
