Trinidad and Tobago walked away with an easy mixed doubles title when the 2011 Caribbean Table Tennis Championships continued yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall (CASH).
After losing out to the Dominican Republic in both the male and female team finals, the duo of Dexter St. Louis and Rheann Chung were unstoppable in the mixed doubles final as they defeated Eva Brito and Juan Vila Batista of the Dominican Republic.
With the versatile skills of St. Louis and the aggressive attitude of Chung, the finals seemed relatively simple for the Trinidadians who dominated the match-up to knock off their Dominican Republic counterparts in three straight sets at 11-6, 11-4 and 12-10.
“It’s a good victory…its a little revenge in the sense that we lost two team finals to Dominican Republic and could have won one if it was played today (yesterday), but it wasn’t and we came out with a victory today and we’re looking forward to the rest of the tournament,” St. Louis told Stabroek Sport after their dominant victory.
Guyana fielded six teams in the mixed doubles competition and saw three of their pairings reaching the quarterfinals but were unable to make it into the semis the Dominican Republic, which fielded three pairs, were too much for the hosts.
Meanwhile the male and female doubles competition got underway yesterday with Guyana looking strong in the men’s category with three of the men’s pairings advancing to the next round.
Nigel Bryan and Colin France looked impressive in their first round as they downed their opponents easily in three straight sets.
The doubles competition will continue today at the said venue from 10:00hrs with the finals is expected to start at 11:00hrs.
