The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) hosted a press conference yesterday to brief the media about Guyana’s participation in upcoming matches in the 2011 Women’s Under-17 CONCACAF tournament that kicks off here today.
Speaking to media workers at the GFF headquarters in Campbellville, acting president of the GFF Franklin Wilson stated that Guyana will be hosting teams from Curacao and Anguilla.
Matches kick off today at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Ground, Bourda at 15:30 hrs with the Junior Lady Jaguars opening their campaign against Curacao.
He also expressed confidence in Guyana’s chances in the competition. Anguilla’s team is scheduled to arrive today.
Two matches will also be played at the Uitvlugt Community Centre Ground, West Coast Demerara, starting on Friday with Anguilla versus Curacao at 15:30 hrs and on Sunday Guyana will face Anguilla at 15:30 hrs as well.
Admission is free at all the matches.
Meanwhile also at the press conference was coach of the Curacao women’s team, Urwin Sille’ and the head of Curacaa’s delegation Ludson Scharbaai. Both men expressed confidence in their side’s chances against both Guyana and Anguilla.
“We are well prepared and we expect a great performance from our girls with our well executed fast-paced offense,” Sille’ said.
Sille’ further stated that his team plays a 3-3-4 system and comprises of players also from Holland and Bonaire who have been playing competitively for about eight months.
Also present was manager of the Junior Lady Jaguars Colin Barker who said his side is well prepared and confident and while the team comprises of players from all over Guyana including Lethem, Bartica and West Demerara, and Canada-based Sarah Vaughn, their chemistry is intact as they were in camp for three weeks and their execution will show on the field.
He further said that his team should also benefit because it is made up of players who have been playing football for a number of years and includes five girls from the recently-concluded Scotia Bank tournament.
In his closing remarks, acting GFF president Wilson stated that the National Women’s team, the Lady Jaguars, will play an international friendly against India on August 24 at the National Stadium, Providence.
Also at the press briefing were GFF Organising Secretary Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major, GFF executive member and president of the women’s association Vanessa Dickenson and coordinator of the women’s under-17 tourney Kirk Douglas.
