USAID-sponsored radio drama Merundoi returned to the airwaves of the National Communication Network (NCN) yesterday, but there has still been no official word on why the broadcast of the serial was abruptly suspended.
The programme was aired in its regular 5:45pm slot on 98.1 yesterday, just over a week after broadcasts were suspended.
NCN is yet to publicly declare why the programme was temporarily pulled but sources had told Stabroek News that they were uncomfortable with a storyline that dealt with voter education.
Yesterday, Head of the Merundoi local office Margaret Lawrence would only say that the programme will be back up. There is still no word on the promised joint press release by the network and Merundoi on the situation.
Last week, a source close to the production had confirmed that they were informed that the show would no longer be aired.
Stabroek News was told that the aim of the voter education storyline was to persuade people to vote unity and not race. “It was all about general education,” a source stressed. Persons close to the radio play said that the development was surprising, since there was no message about a political party or anything that would incite tension or conflict.
