A prisoner was yesterday morning stabbed by another inmate at the Camp Street jail and had to be rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) where he was admitted.
Director of Prisons Dale Erskine confirmed to Stabroek News that prisoner Leroy Alstrom was stabbed in the chest by a fellow inmate sometime yesterday morning.
He said that the police were notified and are now investigating and the alleged attacker has been isolated from the general prison population.
Erskine could not say what weapon was used in the attack but said the police now have possession of the item.
Alstrom underwent surgery for the wound and is now in a male medical ward at the GPHC.
When this newspaper visited him, Alstrom was seen lying almost motionless, wearing a breathing mask.
