A contract has been signed for the first phase of construction of a playground at Area ‘B’ Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
The $688,020 contract, for a fence to be built around the play area, is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the Guyana-Canada Partnership Programme.
Development Planner Fayola Azne, at a press conference on Wednesday, said that the project was finalised after several consultations with the community group, which decided on different community projects that it would like to see become a reality in Lusignan. The project itself, Azne said, speaks of a fence that is 120 feet by 100 feet. Once completed, the area will be used as a playground. She added that work will commence on August 22nd and is expected to last for approximately two weeks.
Azne further stated that this is just the first part of the project as the community group highlighted other projects such as the provision of a cricket pitch, garbage receptacles and other such projects. “At the end of the day, we would like to have a playground that persons can use and do whatever it is they want to,” she said.
She also announced that a local contractor, Mahendra Goberdhan, will be facilitating the work, while adding that everyone who will be working on the project will be from Area ‘B.’
Meanwhile, Project Coordinator Jose Canjura said work is being done with the Central Housing and Planning Authority to help bring awareness about planning, the role of the planning profession and its involvement in community engagement as it helps the community come together and work towards its own.
