Davia Chambers of Trinidad and Tobago bested 10 other young women to walk away with the Miss Jamzone International pageant crown at the Splashmins Fun Park and Resort, on Sunday evening.
The announcement of Chambers as the queen, around 11:30, did not go down well with the many who had journeyed to the Linden/Soesdyke Highway for the pageant, as they felt home girl Jovan Wilson should have been crowned. Wilson won the first-runner-up spot, followed by Kenlly Aranguren of Venezuela and Fatisha Imo of St. Kitts/Nevis.
After the national costume and fantasy beachwear segments,
Chambers, 19, a news anchor, walked away with the title after the final question segment, in which she squared off against three of the other contestants. Chambers, who was also awarded the Miss Body Beautiful prize and tied with Miss Venezuela for the Miss Congeniality prize, did well in answering the final question, which was posed by journalist Gordon Moseley, who was one of the judges.
She was asked: If you were to become an ambassador for your country what will be your first order of business?
The new queen said she was already an ambassador because she had represented her country before. She noted that Trinidad needs promotion because there has
been a decline in tourism and she added that she viewed her participation in the pageant as a way to put her country back on the market.
The remaining six delegates were Marcia Baptist of Dominica, Stacey Norine Ceder of Suriname, Trishauna Clarke of Jamaica, Rhea Cummings of Barbados, Patrish Lionel of St. Lucia and Latisha Green of Antigua and Barbuda.
CEO of Hits and Jams Entertainment Kerwin Bollers said that Miss Brazil dropped out of the competition with no explanation. Another contestant who was initially introduced as Miss Brazil
dropped out of the competition as well.
Miss St. Kitts copped the two remaining special prizes for Best Gown and Online Popularity, with the latter being decided by an online debate hosted by INEFX. This contestant also stood out in her national costume, which saw her dancing while elevated on stilts.
Among the entertainers for the evening were boy band G-Money Federation and singer Jory, who continued from his performance at the Regional Night concert to bash Jamaican artiste Vybz Kartel for disrespecting Guyanese by not appearing as promised.
During his performance of “Down Deh,” Jory sung “Kartel go down deh” and later he said, “De boy lyrical and
me rate him but he attitude stink.”
The second leg of the pageant was part of a whole-day affair at the fun park. It brought the curtains down on the two-week Jamzone Summer Break, which saw a number of international artistes travelling to Guyana to entertain fans, although some failed to show up while others failed to entertain.
