An aunt who assaulted and cursed her niece was yesterday fined $30,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Mohani Singh accepted that on August 13 at Austin Street, Campbellville she unlawfully assaulted her niece, Chandralaka Balram. Singh admitted also that on the same day she used abusive language to Balram, thereby resulting in a breach of the peace.
Meanwhile, Balram was also arraigned for using abusive language to Singh on the same day.
The 24-year-old salesgirl who resides at 77 South Turkeyen, ‘C’ Field Sophia, denied the charge when it was read to her by the magistrate.
The unrepresented young woman was successful in obtaining bail for herself after the prosecution had no objection to her application.
No facts relating to Balram’s charge were presented to the court.
Meanwhile, in presenting the facts against Singh, Police Corporal Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question at about 14:30 hrs, Balram along with two police officers went to Singh’s house to arrest Singh’s husband.
While there, Pindar said, Singh approached her niece and chucked her and in the process started to use a series of expletives towards her.
The court then heard that Balram subsequently reported the matter to the Kitty Police Station after which her aunt was arrested and charged for the offences.
When given a chance to speak, Singh declined. She was then informed that she would be fined $15,000 for each charge.
