Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC) last week launched “Kids for Christ,” an arm of the organisation aimed at reaching at-risk children in various areas of the country.
The programme was officially launched at a ceremony held at the Enterprise Primary School in D’Urban Backlands and began on Monday.
According to programme co-coordinator Allison Baptiste, the initiative targets children in depressed communities to help them develop physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. The project caters for children from ages 4 to 14 years and offers remedial reading, writing, craft and skills training, counselling, mentoring and a feeding programme. Counselling is also offered in a family setting.
The first community being targeted is D’Urban Backlands, directly behind the Chinese Embassy, where approximately 20 children have been identified to benefit from the programme. Sessions are to be held twice at the Enterprise Primary School.
Baptiste explained that in time the project will expand to other communities. The aim is to establish centres all across Guyana to meet the needs of at-risk children and to help them establish “a solid foundation.”
The programme originated out of a similar project implemented by CCC in the US, called ‘Save America’s Youth.’
