A body-work mechanic was yesterday charged with being in possession of forged US bank notes.
The charge against Anthony Charles, 25, states that on August 24, at Georgetown, he had in his possession nine US$100 bank notes, without lawful authority or excuse, knowing same to be forged.
Charles, of Lot 4 Resource, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the indictable charge of possession of forged bank notes when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. He was subsequently admitted to bail in the sum of $150,000 by Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton.
No facts of what transpired on the day in question were presented to the court.
Attorney George Thomas secured bail for Charles, whom he said was the sole breadwinner of his household and posed no risk of flight. He said that the accused has a fixed place of abode and could be found by the police at anytime, thereby posing no risk of flight.
Counsel also stated that his client had no antecedents and had been cooperating with the police.
The prosecution had no objection to the bail application made by the defence, but requested that same be set in a substantial sum to ensure the defendant returns to court to stand trial.
The father of a one was later informed that he would be granted bail and was ordered to return for a hearing at Court One on November 16.
