National junior lawn tennis player Aretta Dey, was the third title winner to be declared in the Nigel’s Junior Tennis Tournament when she defeated Afruica Gentle to claim the girls’ under-14 title on Thursday last at the courts of the Racquet Centre, Woolfood Avenue.
Dey took down Gentle, sister of national girls’ junior number one seed Shawna Gentle, 4 – 2, 4 – 3, 5 – 7, while she defeated Annessa Grandison in straight sets 4 – 1, 5 – 3.
In her other match, Gentle defeated Grandison 4-2 0-4 10-8.
Over in the boys U-14 category, D Caesar and Craig Campbell made their way to the final.
In straight sets ending 4 – 1, 5 – 3 Ceasar defeated the category’s top seed Khalif Gobin. Ceasar also won against D. Mohabeer 4 – 2, 1 – 4, 10 – 8, while Campbell won 4 – 0, 4 – 0 against Ryan Deokie.
Meanwhile over on the courts of the Pegasus Hotel, in the senior category, Dey put together another win in the girls’ U-18 category, winning 6 – 2, 6 – 2 against Stephanie Brassington.
Krystal Sukra also managed to stay in the game after she defeated Aruna Ramrattan 6 – 0, 6 – 3.
On the boys side, Neochandra Persaud, Dominic Frazer, Gobin, Gavin Lewis, Judah Stephney and Seanden David Longe all collected wins in their matches.
Persaud earned his win against Campbell, whom he overwhelmed 6 – 4, 6 – 7 (3 – 7), 6 – 3.
Stephney recorded a double bagel ()6-0, 6-0) win against Linden Ross.
But it was not all wins for Stephney who later lost to David Longe 5 – 7, 1 – 6. Frazer won 6-4 2-6 6-2 against Delroy Austin, Gobin defeated Alex Brassington 6-2 6-3, while Benedict Sukra defeated Lewis 6-3 6-0.
