Keon Joseph’s five wicket haul led West Berbice to victory over Blairmont Community Centre last Sunday as the 2011 Tenelec Inc. first division limited-overs round robin cricket competition began at various grounds across Berbice.
According to a press release, the first round saw four matches being played with West Berbice mauling Blairmont by nine wickets in one of the key encounters.
Joseph seemingly took away the self-confidence of the Blairmont players with figures of 5-17 off seven overs which helped to down Blairmont for a paltry score of 39 in 15.4 overs at the Blairmont Community Centre ground.
Keith Fraser assisted Joseph by grabbing four for 14 off seven overs.
West Berbice in reply, ended on 40 for 1 with Raffiel Estriado 20 on not out.
Chandrashekar Arjune slammed 56 in a losing cause as Port Mourant Karibee Rice lost to defending Albion Community Centre by three wickets. Former national under-19 opening batsman Moshin Perkhan scored 42 to assist Port Mourant Karibee Rice to 168 for 8.
Albion Community Centre in reply reached 170 for 7 in 44 overs with Jonathan Foo playing skillfully for his 37 runs while Devendra Bishoo chipped in with 34 not out. Former West Indies batsman Sewnarine Chattergoon also contributed with a meaningful 27 runs.
At the Rose Hall Town ground, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets defeated Skeldon Community Centre by 10 wickets as Rose Hall elected to field first.
Skeldon then collapsed to 82 all out in 24 overs with Gary Phillips contributing the only meaningful score of 29.
Eon Hooper took four for nine from 5.3 overs while Renwick Batson and Loyydel Lewis picked up figures of 2 for 16 from seven overs and 2 for 16 from four overs respectively.
Renwick Batson and Dominic Rikhi then steered Rose Hall Town to victory with scores of 37 and 27 not out respectively as Rose Hall Town reached their target in 21 overs, scoring 83 without loss.
The Cumberland ground saw Young Warriors defeating Police by five wickets. The Lawmen took first strike in the match which was reduced to 35 overs-a-side but only managed 78 all out in 22.1 overs.
Devendra Ramoutar’s three for 25 from 6.1 overs along with Amir Rahaman’s three for 27 from seven overs helped to constrict the policemen to their subpar score.
Young Warriors then made quick work of the runs in 13.2 overs but lost five wickets on their way to their final score of 85 runs. Linden Austin stroked 29 not out while Balram Samaroo added 19 not out.
A fifth scheduled first round match between Edinburgh and Bermine had to be postponed because of the unavailability of the Edinburgh venue.
The competition will continue this Sunday at different venues in Berbice.
