Beverage giants, Demerara Distillers Limited, under its international brand Pepsi, has renewed cricket sponsorship of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Pepsi Under-19 team for this year.
This is the eighth year in succession that the sponsorship package worth $218,000 is being given to the club.
RHTYSC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster at the presentation stated that DDL and Pepsi in 2004 replaced GT&T as the Under-19 team sponsor and over the last seven years the Pepsi Under-19 has won the Berbice Championship thrice and was the runner-up earlier this year to Albion.
The team, since its formation, has produced a total of 20 junior national cricketers and over 45 players for Berbice at all levels.
This year, three members of the team, Dominic Rikhi, Clinton Pestano and Loyydel Lewis, represented Guyana at the Under-19 tournament.
Arif Chan has played at the Under-15 level and Shemaine Campbelle is currently with the West Indies female team.
The Pepsi Under-19 team, Foster also disclosed, has been involved this year in 11 community development projects at a cost of $1.5M, including donations to schools, churches and NGOs and educational scholarships.
DDL Regional Manager, Albert Budhoo, in handing over the sponsorship cheque, described the relationship between the club and his company as very successful.
He expressed confidence that the relationship would grow stronger and would produce more stars like Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon and Shawn Pereira.
Budhoo also pledged his company’s assistance in the future and urged the players to remain focused and disciplined.
