Taxi drivers managed to apprehend an armed bandit after he had robbed a female dispatcher from the Green Ice Taxi Service located at Cross Street and Mandela Avenue yesterday around 12:30 pm.
According to a police press release, Jenella Burke, 25, was on duty when a man, armed with a handgun, approached her and took away her personal jewellery, two cell phones and $51,000 cash, later escaping on foot.
Burke quickly alerted drivers attached to the taxi service and informed them of what had transpired. Drivers then caught up with the perpetrator on Mandela Avenue and confronted him. He then discharged rounds in the direction of the drivers. A window of vehicle HB 8303 was damaged during the episode.
However, he was overpowered and the unlicensed .38 revolver with three live rounds and two spent shells were taken away and handed over to the police.
The suspect is in police custody after being treated at the GPHC and sent away.
A cell phone and a quantity of cash were recovered by the police. Further investigations led to the arrest of two other men who are in police custody assisting with the investigations.
