National Grade Six Examination top performers from across Region 10 were recently awarded by the management of Barrow’s Restaurant and Lounge in the presence of their parents, teachers and officials of the Department of Education in Region 10.
The award ceremony which has become an annual feature over the past seven years saw students from the far reaches of Kwakwani to Rocktone converging at Barrow’s Restaurant and Lounge to be honoured at a ceremonial event.
Teron Alleyne who topped the country at the National Grade Six Examination was highly commended and in his brief remarks he promised to strive for nothing less as he moves on to a higher level of learning.
In addition to a few cultural items there were brief but interesting remarks by host Dunstan Barrow and the sponsors, including Digicel Director Gregory Dean and Citizens Bank Personnel and Human Resource Manager Denise Thompson.
Chief Education Officer Olato Sam who delivered the feature address challenged both students and their parents to maintain their focus since the students are now launching out into a new stage of their academic pursuits.
“This is an occasion that is honouring excellence, and this is just one of many occasions that you’ll be a part of as you achieve excellence in your academic pursuits.”
Sam also urged parents to do their best in supporting their children throughout their secondary schooling and further on to the university level.
Meanwhile, Barrow observed that the award ceremony coincides with the celebrations of his birth anniversary and as the years progress new features would be added.
This year a number of corporate entities were brought onboard, making it possible for a larger number of students to be honoured.
Cheryl Wills of the Regma Pri-mary School was honoured as the Teacher-of-the-Year having produced the country’s top student and contributing to Region 10 recording the most passes with students attending the most senior secondary schools in Guyana.
Region 10’s top Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) student Zinab Abdul–Karim was also present. And she delivered an inspiring speech urging students to emulate her performance as she had topped Region 10 five years ago when she wrote the ‘common entrance’ examination, now known as the NGSE.
