With the laying of government’s fibre optic cable from Brazil completed, the project is now moving into its next phase which includes connectivity and testing.
“We’re about to start connectivity,” senior government engineer Walter Willis told this newspaper. According to him, this will include attaching the joint boxes, splicing and testing the cable. Willis explained that the cable, which runs from Lethem to Castellani House, is 540 km long, and has been set up in blocks of 10 kilometres. Willis said Alexei Ramotar, the project manager, is spearheading the team looking after this aspect of the project.
The government’s investment in the fibre optic cable has been plugged as an initiative to push e-governance in the country and improve local internet access.
Work on the cable commenced in January and the entire project was expected to take three and a half months and the cable is expected to supplement government’s much vaunted One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) programme.
