Mark Prince was on Monday accused of being part of a gang that stole $7M in items during a home invasion at West Berbice.
Prince, 31, was placed on $500,000 bail by Magistrate Sueanna Lovell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, after being charged with two counts of armed robbery.
It is alleged that on August 3, at Ithaca Village, West Bank Berbice, being armed with a gun, Prince robbed Jermaine Benjamin of gold jewellery, a bed sheet set, a Dell laptop, a bottle of perfume and $2 million in cash (Guyana currency). It also alleged that on the said day at Ithaca Village, the defendant robbed Kwami Edward of one Toyota Primo motor car valued $3M.
Prince, a labourer who resides at Lot 32 Laing Avenue, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charges when they were read to him.
According to the prosecution’s case, on the day in question, Prince was at Ithaca Village when, along with two others who were armed at the time, he broke and entered into the home of the complainant Benjamin, tied him up and took the articles mentioned in the charge. The prosecution further stated that on September 2, the accused was arrested and a stolen gold chain was found on his person.
Prince’s attorney asked that his client be granted bail on the grounds that he was never identified at an identification parade. He also added that the defendant was the sole breadwinner of his home and was the father of two children.
The prosecution, however, objected to bail, arguing that if he was granted bail it was likely that he would not return to court to stand trial.
The accused was later placed on $250,000 bail for each of the offences.
