Members of the Ruimveldt Parent Support Group said they face severe discrimination when travelling with differently-abled children and that they needed a building to provide services to these children and their parents, during a meeting with Prime Minister Samuel Hinds on Sunday.
According to a Government Information agency (GINA) press release the group was established in 1996 and comprises 51 members. Its principal aim is to provide assistance and support to parents of differently-abled children by rendering teaching services to the children in an environment conducive to learning.
President of the group, Reverend Lurleen Bess told the Prime Minister that they are in urgent need of a facility where they can provide training to the children and their families as their current location is inadequate. Members also lamented the discrimination they face when using public transportation to take the children to the David Rose School. Some then suggested the former Guyana Stores Shopping Centre as a prime location. Hinds later visited the said location, GINA said.
After the formal meeting, Robert Weekes, a disabled member of the group, presented the prime minister with a token of appreciation.
