Investigations are still ongoing into the theft of over $1 million, cell phones and other valuables from the dressing room of the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC), President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Ramsey Ali says.
The incident occurred Tuesday and the police are yet to make an arrest but they maintain that investigations are ongoing.
Ali told Stabroek News Sports in an interview yesterday that the police could not make a pronouncement on the investigations into the matter.
Following the incident, Ali said the board has begun to put measures in place to prevent such a recurrence.
Room attendance was the first issue addressed by the board, he said, noting that while it is known that a record of room attendance should be taken it was not adhered to.
The GCB, he said, will be meeting with players, managers and coaches to discuss the issue of walking with large amounts of cash on their person when going to play.
The next international tournament slated for Guyana is the Regional limited overs tournament and there will be noticeable changes in security, including police presence at all grounds being used, Ali said.
That tournament, according to the GCB head, is slated to commence on October 19 and will feature eight teams including Guyana.
Reports on the incident are that while Guyana and Trinidad were engaged in a friendly match last Tuesday afternoon, an unknown person or persons targeted bags and pieces of clothing belonging to the Guyanese players.
It was after the match that cash, cell phones and other valuables were discovered missing. There was a guard at the gate but none near the dressing room. No one reported seeing any suspicious movements prior to the discovery of the theft.
Reports are that Captain Royston Crandon lost approximately G$800,000 which was concealed in a bag.
