West Indies Women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira admitted that the batting has been a sore point in the current series against Pakistan but she is confident that her side will prevail tonight since the team has been together for some time now.
Stabroek Sport caught up with Aguilleira yesterday at the Princess Hotel where she said that the team’s preparation has been good and their major focus going into tonight’s game at the Guyana National Stadium is to “be psychologically prepared”.
“We will be giving our best when we get out there. We are a team that always sticks together and fight until the end and we really want to win all four of our games,” Aguilleira declared.
She pointed out that the strength of the team lies in bowling, pointing out Trinidadian offspinner Anisa Mohammed as an example. Mohammed has already taken 14 wickets in the tournament.
The West Indies Women captured the first two matches in Grenada earlier this week and will be looking to sweep the doubleheader tonight and tomorrow evening. It is the first time that the ladies will be playing under lights in the Caribbean.
They are going into tonight’s match after their 3-1 domination of the Pakistanis in the One-Day International series played at Arnos Vale in St Vincent.
The West Indies batting has been weak throughout the tournament, with only Aguilleira scoring a half century of 71. Shanel Daley and Deandra Dottin were the other West Indians to pass 30.
On the other hand, Pakistan Captain Sama Mir when she spoke with Stabroek Sport said that the team is prepared for the tournament and they will be looking to pull one back on the West Indies team.
