Radesh Rameshwar, Chief Executive Officer of Kares Engineering Company sponsors of the inaugural 10/10 softball tournament which ended recently has promised to double the prize money for next year’s tournament.
“The prize money will be doubled next year and the player of the series will win a car,” Rameshwar said at yesterday’s presentation ceremony at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) ground Bourda.
The inaugural 10/10 tape ball tournament that began in June and concluded last Sunday night, attracted 942 teams from across the country. The Georgetown Pitbulls and Mike’s Well Woman teams were the senior male and female champions of the tournament.
In the schoolboys and girls’ categories, J.C. Chandisingh Secondary and L’Adventure Secondary were the respective winners.
Trophies, laptops, motor cycles and two million six hundred and fifty thousand dollars in prize money were handed out at the ceremony.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rameshwar thanked the media for its coverage throughout the tournament.
He also extended congratulations to all the teams that participated and the eventual winners of the tournament.
The Kares Engineering boss expressed his delight to be the major sponsor of the competition and boasted that next year’s competition will be bigger and better, as there was much room for improvement.
Rameshwar mentioned that planning has already begun to make next year’s tournament a better one.
He said that he was hoping to attract in excess of 1500 teams for next year’s tournament, to double the prizes money and put up a car as the incentive for the player of the series.
The Georgetown Pitbulls became the inaugural Kares/Bushy park Sawmills 10/10 champions and winner’s of one million dollars and a trophy when they defeated Invaders by 42 runs.
Derwin Christian won the Man-of-the-Match award after scoring 21 not out and taking two wickets for one run. He took home a 100c Jialing cc motorcycle and a trophy for his efforts. The runners-up, Invaders, received a $500,000 cheque and a trophy
The Mike’s Well Woman team won $500,000 and a trophy after they overcame the Trophy Stall Angels by 13 runs. Victoria Bacchus won herself a Jialing 100 cc motorcycle for being adjudged the Player of the Man by scoring an unbeaten 30, the highest total by any player on the night of the finals.
Also on the distaff side, the L’Adventure Secondary school girls earned a $200,000 cheque and a trophy for a school project for defeating the IPE Divas. Tishana Douglas was awarded a laptop for being the Player of the Match. Andrew Singh, a teacher at the school said the prize money will go towards rehabilitating the school’s ground.
In the schoolboys final, J. C Chandisingh Secondary defeated St Rose’s High to walk away with the $200,000 cheque and a trophy for their school project with Imzan Alli being the recipient of a laptop and a trophy for being the Man of the match. He scored 13 runs and took two wickets for the winning team. Vanita Matheson, a teacher at the Rose Hall Town school, mentioned that the prize money will be well spent, as it would be used to purchase screens for the school’s auditorium in order to separate the classes and to also purchase sports equipment for the students.
