The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Friday launched the Schools Gardening Competition at the Diamond Secondary School, East Bank Demerara, as part of activities to celebrate Education Month.
This competition which is open to all levels of schools will be tracked with the use of a weekly log book, the Government Information Agency (GINA) said in a press release.
The objective of this competition is to foster and enhance agricultural drives in schools countrywide and to encourage students to grow more food and become more involved in agriculture,
Having judged the schools’ produce regionally, there would be another judging at the national level with those schools that would have competed and were selected at the regional level. Three best producers would be selected from all regions, the release stated.
“We are seeing a very worrying trend; we are observing that the price of food is increasing. If you go to the market with your parents or visit the supermarket, you will hear your mothers and fathers complaining that the price of food is going up … it is predicted that the food prices are not likely to go down sometime, not for a number of years,” Dr. Lystra Fletcher-Paul, FAO’s Country Representative said.
Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary, Pulandar Kandhi launched the competition, the release added.
