The farmers landing at Mahaica market which is used in bringing in farm products by boat will be improved, Minister of Local Govern-ment and Regional Development Norman Whittaker said Friday, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Minister Whittaker made this disclosure when he was at the Mahaica market to hand over the contract for the construction of the area’s new market to C. Dookie Contracting Service.
The two-platform structure is used by more than 100 farmers and over the years became dilapidated from constant use.
“There is need for extensive rehabilitation work and we are anticipating that we will be able to garner from the construction of the market funds that can be used to address the situation,” Whittaker said.
And Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government Nigel Dharamlall added: “We expect that with some level of intervention, safety as well as efficiency will be improved.”
