A Brazilian woman was on Saturday afternoon found with her throat slit in an internet café at Takutu Backdam, Region Eight and three men are in police custody assisting with investigations.
Dead is Marie Alves Da Silva aged 45.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud, when contacted yesterday, told Stabroek News that the woman was discovered with an incised wound to the neck. The dead woman worked in the café where she was found, he said, adding that a police team has been dispatched to the area to investigate.
Persaud said that a young man was seen entering the café and leaving shortly after. About half an hour later, he said, another man entered and found the woman’s lifeless body. The discovery was made around 16:00 hrs.
According to the crime chief, nothing was discovered missing and the police are in the process of checking to see whether she had any problems with anyone.
The body was transported to Lyken’s Funeral Home yesterday and a post-mortem examination has been scheduled for tomorrow.
There have been several murders in the E&F Division under which Takutu Backdam falls. Da Silva is the second woman to have been murdered in this division for this year.
On August 24, the bloodied body of Donna Lakeram was found in Semang, Issano. A post-mortem examination later revealed that she died as a result of strangulation and multiple trauma. A man has since been charged with her murder.
Police last week reported an increase of 3% in murders, with 91 murders recorded at the end of August this year, compared with 88 for the same period last year. Thirty-one of the murders committed this year have been of the “disorderly type,” 18 were the result of domestic issues, 17 occurred during armed robberies and five were “execution-type”, the police had said.
