Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted a man $100,000 bail when he on Friday appeared in court charged with stealing a chain of similar value.
The allegation against Akeem Hymer is that on September 7, he stole from the person of Dexter Smart one gold chain valued $100,000, property of the said Smart. Eighteen-year-old Hymer pleaded not guilty to the offence when it was read to him in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The prosecution told the court that on the said day the accused approached Smart and a friend who had been at a snackette, on the pretext that he was there to make a purchase. He subsequently snatched the chain from around the virtual complainant’s neck and attempted to escape. However, Smart gave chase and, with assistance from a public spirited citizen, detained Hymer.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence.
The matter was transferred for Court Two for reports and fixtures.
