The first annual Hajjin Zeleena Rafeek Memorial countrywide Inter-Jamaat 10/10 knockout softball cricket tournament organized by the Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) of Guyana in association with Raf’s Variety Store bowled off last Sunday with a series of matches at the MYO ground.
According to a release from the organizers, Success Jamaat overcame the odds to pull off an upset victory over Dundee holding off their opponents to win by five runs.
Success, batting first, amassed a challenging 107 for five off their allotted 10 overs.
Zahir Persaud led the team’s scoring with 53.
Saddique Muslim picked up two wickets for 10 runs off his two allotted overs.
Dundee, in reply, blasted their way to 74 for two at the end of the seventh over and looked on course for an easy victory.
However, the introduction of Basheer Saffie changed the situation as he picked up two wickets for seven runs in one over.
With the equation 27 runs to get off of 12 balls, the Dundee batsmen smashed 14 runs off the ninth over to bring the match down to 14 from six deliveries.
However tight bowling from the Success bowlers only allowed eight runs to be had from the final over as Dundee ended on 102 for five.
A second match at the MYO ground between Ogle and Unity featured a lot of fireworks as balls were constantly dispatched to or over the boundary ropes.
Led by Nadir Baksh’s individual score of 83 runs, Ogle scored 149-4 with Baksh smashing 10 sixes and two fours.
The huge total apparently daunted the spirit of the Unity players as they never really looked in the running for victory reaching 88 for three at the end of their allotted 10 overs.
Anand Mohamed was the main contributor with 58 which included five sixes and two fours.
Andrew Williams picked up two wickets for eight runs off his two overs for Ogle.
