A man who allegedly used insulting language and assaulted a police constable was yesterday placed on $35,000 bail when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on September 12 at Longden and America Streets, Georgetown, Orrin Jones used insulting language to Police Constable Sheldon Wickham where a breach of the peace was occasioned. It is further alleged that on the same day the accused also unlawfully assaulted the virtual complainant (VC). The accused who resides at Lot 194 North Haslington, East Coast Demerara (ECD) denied both charges when they were read to him by the magistrate.
In presenting the facts of the case, Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Lionel Harvey, told the court that on the day in question, the VC who was on a motorcycle in the America Street area was called a “big cross” by the accused. Harvey stated that the VC went to the defendant and identified himself as a policeman and told him he should not behave in such a manner. Harvey said further that the accused then picked up a piece of wood and flung it at the VC and the constable subsequently reported the matter at the police station.
The accused was then placed on bail and told that the matter will be called again on September 30.
