(Trinidad Express) Since the State of Emergency was announced by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on August 21, law enforcement officials have arrested 2,167 persons, 447 of them in connection with gang-related offences.
This disclosure was made yesterday by public information officer of the Police Service, ASP Joanne Archie, during yesterday’s daily media briefing at the Police Administration building in Port of Spain.
Archie said between 8.a.m. on Wednesday and 8.a.m yesterday, 62 persons were arrested, 30 of them in relation to drug offences, one for breach of curfew, five in connection with other crimes, four on serious crimes, 18 on outstanding warrants and four on outstanding enquiries.
She also stated that the new areas, in which curfew restrictions took effect from Wednesday, came as a result of data supplied by the Crime and Problem Analysis (CAPA) Branch.
“However, as I said, we review our crime data from time to time and this is what we use in determining whether an area is a hot spot. What we have seen is a displacement in crime since the state of emergency. As the Police Service continues to review what our data tells us, we come up with strategies and operational tactics to deal with those data as we get them,” Archie said.
