Eyewitnesses informed Stabroek News that Kumar Persaud aka ‘Brother,‘ an employee of Puran Disposal Services who resides at 104 Best Village West Coast Demerara, was riding his bicycle in a westbound direction when he was hit.
The man, they claimed, seemed to be somewhat intoxicated and was riding in a wobbly manner when a Toyota Carina driven by an off-duty policeman swerved to avoid hitting a speeding vehicle and collided with him.
Persaud was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and was treated and discharged. However the driver of the vehicle persuaded the man to seek a second medical opinion to ensure he was uninjured.
He volunteered to take the cyclist to the Woodlands Hospital where he underwent several X-rays and was diagnosed again as not having sustained serious injuries.
A relative of the driver said that they felt that although both parties were partly responsible for the accident, Persaud should be re-evaluated after being sent home by the West Demerara Hospital. This newspaper was told that the driver and his relative did not have much faith in the public health system, and since Persaud was not in a financial position to go to a private hospital, they decided to take him to Woodlands for additional checks themselves.
Persaud and his wife informed Stabroek News that they did not want the matter to reach the stage of court proceedings, and they were grateful for the treatment he had received. The family stated that they would relay their stance on the matter to the police.
