(De Ware Tijd) The Hague – The Dutch government regrets and condemns the anti-homosexual statements made by Parliamentarian Ronny Asabina.
In July, the latter stated in Parliament that homosexuality in Suriname should be completely exterminated and that he advocated an anti-homosexual policy. The Dutch Parliamentarians wanted to know from Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Uri Rosenthal whether he is willing to realize a joint-condemnation of Asabina’s statements in EU-relation and whether the Dutch government is willing to enter into a sustainable dialogue with the Surinamese government about homosexual rights.
According to Rosenthal, Asabina’s statements do not reflect the standpoint of the Surinamese government. Later this month, the Surinamese government has to formally inform the Human Rights’ Council of the UN of its standpoint regarding the rights of homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and others like them in Geneva, Switzerland.
