The Environmental Community Health Organisation (Echo) has launched its Health Schools Competition at 14 schools in Region Three and plans to start its recycling project and clubs next month end.
According to a press release the participating schools are St Lawrence Primary, Blake Primary, Parika Salem Primary, Parika Backdam Primary, Ruby Backdam Primary, Greenwich Park Primary, Philadelphia Primary, Tushen Primary, Zeelugt Primary, Saraswat Primary, Uitvlugt Primary, Stewartville Primary, Meten-Meer-Zorg Primary and Leonora Primary.
A team of judges comprising environmental professionals will inspect the schools based on indicators including garbage collection, overgrowth/undergrowth and large grasses, overhanging trees, water and sanitary facilities, the condition of the class rooms and health and safety, including fire fighting equipment.
The contest is supported by the Ministry of Education, PAHO/WHO and members of the private sector including Courts Ali’s Supermarket, Bourda and Bounty supermarkets. The final judging and awarding of prizes will be done at a special ceremony hosted on October 28 in Parika.
Echo expects to launch its recycling project on the same day in Region Three. It also plans to start its clubs in island schools soon. The group urges all competitors and businesses to get involved in this and other activities aimed at protecting and preserving the environment.
