An 18-year-old man who said he slapped, but did not cuff his girlfriend because she wanted to end their relationship was yesterday jailed for 14 days when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation is that on September 18 at Festival City, Georgetown, Mark Wilson assaulted Ashley Smith.
Wilson pleaded guilty to the offence when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, but told the court, “I neva cuff her up. I just turn and slap she”.
According to the facts presented to the court by Police Prosecutor, Corporal Lionel Harvey, on the day in question at around 12:30 hrs, the VC was waiting for transportation at Festival City.
Wilson approached, demanded that the VC not leave him, then forced her to sit next to him in a bus. It was while they were in the bus, Harvey said, that Wilson dealt the young woman several cuffs to her stomach and slapped her.
The matter was later reported to the police and Wilson was subsequently charged, the police corporal said.
The man was sentenced to 14 days imprisonment for the charge of assault.
