A labourer who was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that on September 20 at Mahdia, Shawn Chung had in his possession, one gramme of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The Soesdyke resident pleaded not guilty to the offence when it was read to him.
In presenting the facts to the court, Prosecutor Steven Telford said that on the day in question around 10:30 hrs, a police patrol went to 111 Miles Mahdia where Chung was observed liming at a bar. Telford said the police approached the accused, conducted a search and a white paper parcel was found in his left hand. He further said that the man was taken to the police station and the content was weighed which amounted to one gramme.
The man pleaded with the court to be placed on bail. However his plea was denied by the magistrate.
The matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for October 19.
