A juvenile was yesterday remanded to prison over possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation is that on September 21 at Georgetown, the accused had in his possession a .32 Taurus pistol and seven matching rounds and was not the holder of a firearm licence.
The unrepresented juvenile pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.
In presenting the facts to the court, Police Corporal Lionel Harvey said that on the day in question at about 18:50 hrs, ranks on a mobile patrol were in the Tucville area and were observing the defendant and two others who were together at the time. Lionel said the police subsequently stopped and conducted a search of the person of the accused and the gun was discovered in the defendant’s waist.
He objected to the accused being placed on bail since no special circumstance was given to the court.
The magistrate took into consideration the seriousness of the offence and as result the boy was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned until September 27 for reports and fixtures.
