Dear Editor,
With reference to your editorial of Thursday, September 22, I should point out that child labour involving youngsters the same age as Rene Fernandes has been around for a long time going back to the days of British Guiana.
I remember some of my classmates left school to find work at the Diamond Estate, something ‘old George’ never permitted me to do since he understood the importance of reading and writing and understanding what you write and read.
Anyway, at present child labour is more pronounced because of economic conditions, especially in those homes where the fathers have absconded.
Since it is difficult to stop youth labour it is better that the Ministry of Human Services or some NGO arranges that youths who are forced for economic reasons to find employment are represented and organized.
Yours faithfully,
W P George
