A post-mortem examination performed yesterday on the body of Sheriff Balmacoon by Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh has revealed the cause of death as haemorrhage and shock due to stab wound.
Balmacoon was fatally stabbed by woman who was said to be mentally ill at Clonbrook, East Coast Demerara, on Saturday last.
The woman has since been arrested and investigations are in progress, a police release said.
Police investigators are now awaiting the medical evaluation of the suspect to determine if she is fit to be charged.
Contacted yesterday Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said it is now a question of whether the woman is fit to appear before the court. He said if it is determined that she is not fit then she will be committed to the mental facility at Berbice for treatment.
Up to press time last evening she remained in police custody.
Meanwhile the PME revealed that Balmacoon only sustained one wound, and that was to the neck. Stabroek News was previously told that the man also sustained a wound to the side and several cuts to the back.
Angela, his wife from whom he had separated, told Stabroek News yesterday that the pathologist who performed the PME said that he sustained only a knife wound to the neck. She stressed that there were no other wounds to the body. .
Balmacoon was making his way home in a drunken state around 9.20 pm and as he passed a closed shop located at the side of the road, a short distance from his home, the woman who was armed with a knife attacked him. Because of his state, he was unable to defend himself, resulting in his throat being slashed.
The man was left on the road bleeding as the woman still armed with the knife ran off. She was found around 7 am the following day at Oil Mill Road, Cove and John, ECD.
This newspaper was told that the woman slept at the shop every night.
