A Sophia resident who allegedly held a woman at gunpoint in her kitchen and robbed her of a gold ring and cash to the value of $179,000 was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine–Beharry.
The allegation is that on September 24 at Georgetown, being armed with a gun, Nigel Wellington robbed Patricia McPherson of a gold ring valued $175,000 and $4,000 cash.
It is further alleged that on the same day the man had in his possession one unlicensed Rossi .32 revolver along with six matching rounds.
The unrepresented Wellington pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
In presenting the facts Police Corporal Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, told the court that on the day in question at about 11:00 am the VC was in her kitchen when the defendant jumped a fence, entered the home through the back door and pointed a gun to her head while demanding that she give up all of her valuables.
He said the man, after obtaining the items, made good his escape. Harvey said that the VC subsequently made a report at the police station where she gave a description of the man and the ranks who quickly responded to the report went to the Sophia area where they conducted a search and subsequently took a suspect into custody. The prosecutor in conclusion stated that at the time the police nabbed the accused, a bag was found on his person which contained the revolver.
After stating the facts, Harvey objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence.
The man was remanded to prison and the matter was adjourned until October 17.
