Hosts Fruta Conquerors left nothing for the competition as they captured the Milo Under-23 Football Tournament on Sunday night at the Tucville Playfield.
After more than six weeks of competition and 96 goals scored in the tournament, Fruta Conquerors brought the wrapon the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Santos Football Club. In the process they pocketed the $100,000 first prize while Santos took home $50,000 as the second place finishers.
Pernel Shultz put the winners ahead from as early as the 13th minute before Marco Marcus stretched the lead in the 36th minute.
Santos had to wait until the 68th minute when Edward Austin found the back of the net.
In the third place match Guyana Police Force (GPF) routed Flamingo 5-1.
Meanwhile, at the presentation ceremony Schultz was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament; Santos’ Colin Harris was the Highest Goal Scorer; Conquerors’ custodian Ryan De Rush was adjudged Best Goalkeeper and Most Disciplined Team was awarded to Charlestown United.
Fifty-eight goals were scored in the round robin stage while 38 were scored in the knockout stage.
