An 18-year-old who allegedly snatched a gold chain valued $150,000 from a woman appeared yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and he was placed on $100,000 bail.
Akime Grant who is facing a charge of larceny from the person allegedly stole from the person of Claudine Joseph one gold chain valued $150,000 on September 9.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant was represented by Attorney Lance Ferreira who made an application for his client to be granted bail, citing that he is only 18-years-old and he is a mechanic who resides at Lot 345 Mango Lane.
In presenting the facts to the court Police Corporal Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, told the court that on the day in question the VC was with a friend when the defendant and three others rode behind her.
He said the accused hit the VC with his bicycle causing her to fall and then he snatched her chain and made good his escape. Harvey further told the court that the matter was reported to the police station and the defendant was later arrested and charged.
After stating the facts Harvey said that the prosecution had no objection to bail but asked the court to place the defendant on bail in a substantial sum to ensure that he returns to court.
The matter was adjourned until October 18, and it will be called at Court Five.
