A man charged with robbery under arms was yesterday placed on $200,000 bail after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The allegation is that on September 29 at Georgetown, Orlando Dale Archer, being armed with a dangerous weapon, a ‘jukker’ (improvised dagger), robbed Robert Sukhai of one gold chain valued $300,000, property of the said Sukhai, the Virtual Complainant (VC).
The unrepresented accused who resides at Fourth Field, South Sophia, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.
In presenting the facts Prosecutor Lionel Harvey told the court that on the day in question, the VC was in the Carmichael Street area in the vicinity of Bishops’ High School when the accused who was armed with a ‘jukker’, and in the company of another person, confronted Sukhai and relieved him of the gold chain and then ran away.
Harvey said that a police patrol vehicle was passing the area and the VC informed the officers of the incident and gave a description of the defendant. He said that the assailant was later caught but the jewellery was not recovered. The man was subsequently arrested and charged, he concluded.
After stating the facts Harvey said that he had no objection to bail but asked that it be granted in substantial sum to ensure that the man returns to court.
The matter was transferred to Court Five where it will be called again on October 28.
