Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) closed the opening day of the Carib Beer first-division two-day encounter against Guyana National Industrial Co-Operation (GNIC) with a commanding 176-run lead on first innings, at the DCC Ground, Queenstown, yesterday.
Batting first, led by a pair of half-centuries by recently selected Guyana opener and West Indies Twenty20 wicket-keeper, Trevon Griffith and Derwin Christian who scored 58 and 55 respectively, DCC were bowled out for 235 in 44.3 overs. Andrew Lyght Jr. and Romesh Dhaniram supported with 27 and 24 runs. The principal wicket-taker for GNIC was Pranchand Sukdeo 3/62 from 18 overs, Collis Butts 3/55 from 17 overs and West Indies chief selector Clyde Butts with 2/71 from 21 overs . GNIC, in reply, had slumped to 55 for 5 at the close of play with left-arm wrist spinner Totaram Bishun and Griffith bowling his part-time off-spin claiming 2/16 and 2/12 each.Play on final day today continues from 9:30hrs.
In the Noble House Seafoods second division competition, rain interrupted all of the four (4) matches played at venues in Georgetown and greater Georgetown.
At Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) Ground; a seven wicket-haul from leg-spinner and 2011 Guyana Under-15 representative Steven Sankar whose figures read 10.4-1-44-7, aided Malteenoes in dismissing hosts MYO for 192 in 36 overs.
Leading the scoring for the MYO outfit was Shafik Ishmile 49, and Naveed Ali 33. Across the road at GNIC ground, DCC closed on 58 for 4, after they had dismissed GNIC for 125 in 23 overs. Opener Lenny Panchand played a lone hand scoring 55 (9×4 1×6), while Sean Hossein (29 not out) and Keon Bailey (17) also chipped in. Tall off-spinner Dennis Squires 5/23 and Troy Thompson 4/32 were the principal wicket-takers for DCC in GNIC’s mediocre first innings total.
In DCC’s reply, Denver Greaves with 25 is the main scorer so far, while renowned national cricket scorer Trevor Hossein bowling left-arm spinner had figures of 3/21 in his six (6) overs. Up the road at Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO) Ground, the host GYO closed in strong position on 315/5 in 46 overs against the Vikings Cricket Club. Openers Lakeram Goberdan (30) and Shivanand Roopnarine (42) gave the home side a solid start with a 87-run opening partnership, before Vijay Gangaram (90), captain Dereck Koulen (86) and Pavindralall Persaud (32 not out) cashed in later on small venue and flat pitch. Finally at the University of Guyana, Turkeyne Ground; Georgetown Cricket Club was struggling at 24 for 5 after 13 overs in their clash with Ace Warriors. However heavy rain in the area ended proceeding for the day at 11:30hrs.
