The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) awarded bursaries to 37 children of officers, other ranks and civilian employees at its 2011 Bursary Awards Ceremony.
In a press release the GDF said each award is valued $25,000 per year and it will be offered over a period of five years provided that the students stay in secondary school.
Brassette Henry, who gained 530 marks at the Grade Six Assessment, topped the list of beneficiaries.
The second and third place awardees are Aneesa Hussain and Kurk Rogers who gained 524 and 521 marks respectively.
The trio gained places at Queen’s College while their peers were awarded places at other secondary schools across the country.
The army said it continues to present bursaries not only as recognition of the efforts of the students themselves but also in recognition of the interest, encouragement and sacrifices made by their parents and guardians to ensure that they excel.
In his address at the ceremony Captain (CG) John Flores extended congratulations to the awardees and their parents for their hard work and dedication.
He told the students that this new phase of their education would demand more attention and dedication and that they must make wise choices to ensure their future success. “Choose to work hard and to set goals that can be achieved,” he said.
Flores also told them to make time to have fun. “Your success will be more worth the while if you have a ‘rounded’ experience,” he added. The captain also encouraged the parents and guardians to remain vigilant and to continue to provide love and support to their children every step of the way.
The ceremony was held at Base Camp Ayanganna last Friday.
