The Guyana Defence Force drew first blood when the 2011 Inter Services Championships ran off with a 10 kilometres road relay yesterday morning.
The Inter Services championship which is an annual event among the four main military services in Guyana namely the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the Prison Guards (PG) saw the GDF taking a comfortable victory over their main rivals GPF in a time of 32 minutes.
GPF clocked 35 minutes for the second position while the GFS and the Prison Guards came in third and fourth respectively, places the latter two teams usually finish in the overall standings.
GDF had a well experienced team of Tyshon Bentick, Jamaal Chisholm, Cleveland Forde, Carlon Alley and Ashanti Scott in that order which allowed them to easily win the race over. Each athlete had to run 2km to complete their leg in the road relay.
Police, seemingly lacked the fire power to keep up with their GDF counterparts and comprised of Kelvin Ceres, Larry Josiah, Dennis Horatio, Owen Chin and Jonella Jonas in that order.
With GDF marking their names at the top of the leader board and with no events scheduled for tomorrow, the GPF will have to wait until Tuesday for the start of the track events before making a more definite impact on the championships at the Camp Ayanganna gorund.
Meanwhile, the GDF will look to continue where they left off with the hopes of winning a second Inter Services title in three years.
