PNCR leader Robert Corbin said he was confident in the abilities of APNU presidential candidate Brigadier (rtd) David Granger to lead the nation, at a flag-raising ceremony held at Congress Place in honour of the party’s 54th anniversary.
“I have no doubt that this year is a watershed year. We have chosen a presidential candidate in whom I feel confident that our country, our economy and our party will be carefully guided,” he said to an audience comprising several party members and stalwarts.
Corbin said the PNCR was born at a time when Guyana faced serious difficulties under colonial rule and the party led the nation through the turmoil of political and racial conflict, eventually gaining the reins of government in 1964, according to a press release. He also urged the gathering to reflect on the party’s achievements and on those who made it possible – founder leader Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham and those who worked with him.
In his address, Granger noted that no worthwhile enterprise can be achieved by a single person. He said the PNC was built on the sacrifices of ordinary people who will continue to ensure that it endures from decade to decade.
He also spoke of the leadership and legacy of Burnham and the contributions made by Joseph Latchmansingh, Eugene Correia, Jane Phillips-Gay and others. Granger posited that the example and exertion of the founders have kept the party energised over the years.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, was chaired by PNCR Vice-Chairmen Dr George Norton and Basil Williams. Party members and stalwarts including General Secretary Oscar Clarke and Assistant General Secretary Amna Ally later enjoyed breakfast.
